29th July 2011 – Munich – Haunting Pictures of Dachau Concentration Camp
Today, Ann and I joined a very thought-provoking tour that took in what happened at Dachou, close to Munich, where we sightseed the day before. Dachou has become synonymous with concentration camps as this place was the first in 1933 when Hitler came to power. Since then, it has functioned until 1945 when the Nazis were defeated. Over the course of that time, the Dachau Administration has recorded 206,206 prisoners and 31,951 deaths there. Most deaths have been the Jews through gassing. Not only the Jews, but the disabled, faiths, homosexuals, political prisoners etc, all because of one tyrannical plan to create the Aryans as a Master race.
Since the liberation of the camp in 1945, many local citizens were forced to visit the camp to see the conditions there and help clean up. Many claimed they had no clue what was going on. Since then, it has served as a settlement, army bases and many more but now, it has turned into a Memorial. Never Again is the phrase here.
This haunting tour with Sandeman’s New Europe Tours, has to be one of the best tours I’ve ever undertaken. The guide absolutely knew his stuff and really made us go through an emotional roller-coaster ride by really going into detail of what happened in each area of the Concentration Camp. I really recommend people to go on this tour.
I’ll never forget the poem that was said loud by the guide which expresses the feeling of inactivity by German intellectuals on people being taken away by the Nazis to the concentration camp.
When the Nazis came for the communists,
I remained silent;
I was not a communist.
When they locked up the social democrats,
I remained silent;
I was not a social democrat.
When they came for the trade unionists,
I did not speak out;
I was not a trade unionist.
When they came for the Jews,
I remained silent;
I wasn’t a Jew.
When they came for me,
there was no one left to speak out.
Haunting poem isn’t it?
Now, please see below the haunting pictures I took in the Memorial. There were many things I felt really uncomfortable and too graphic to take pictures of so I didn’t. I’m only showing you what I can.
Never Again.
