KLM

Meeting with KLM Royal Dutch Airlines a couple of months ago, I could see their staff was truly excited about what lay in store for the company and their customers in 2014. Positively bouncing was probably the more accurate term! Sitting down with them with a coffee in hand, I began to find out what KLM has to offer.

But first of all, who are KLM?

KLM Royal Dutch Airlines was founded in 1919, making it the world’s oldest airline still operating under its original name. KLM prides itself on having an extensive network, currently offering a choice of 17 departure points in the UK and Ireland, opening up to 190 destinations worldwide.
KLM operates through its hub airport, Schiphol in Amsterdam, which is the number one airport in Europe and where 70% of KLM’s passengers transfer en route to their final destination. 139,000 passengers travel on 1,114 flights on an average day.

Impressive, huh?

What was even more exciting is that they wanted to work with me, the handsome face behind RexyEdventures.com! More specifically, they have tasked me with the challenge of spending 24 hours in Schiphol Airport to find out what KLM has to offer through their ‘Hollywood Boulevard’, restaurants, business lounge, restaurants, library and even more unique and impressive things to do in the airport.

So from Tuesday 10th December 2013, I shall be flying from one of their regional UK departures airport – Humberside, to land in Amsterdam Schiphol and fly back out the next day (Wednesday 11th December 2013) to another regional UK airport – London Heathrow. They do definitely want to show convenience is definitely key here.

Armed with my many media gadgets, I shall be tweeting, facebooking, instagramming and heck even foursquaring live from the airport every hour to show you 24 glimpses of the KLM Airport Hub. Not only that, I shall do one better by creating a video afterwards to show you just exactly what I got up to in my time in Schiphol Airport.

Of course, I need a bit of Adventure myself. It just wouldn’t be a Rexy Edventure if I didn’t. So I asked KLM to surprise me with several challenges over the course of the day.

So why am I doing this myself?

I’ve gone through Amsterdam Schiphol a few times already and often marvelled at the expansive airport filled with delights and experiences ready to be enjoyed by bemused passengers. Unfortunately, I never knew what is there to do throughout my transfers. So I’m taking this as an opportunity to create several guides of what to do in Schiphol Airport purely solely for you!

As I finished up my coffee with KLM Royal Dutch Airlines, they were pretty keen to tell me of their 2014 plans…

2014 is going to be an exciting year for KLM! KLM will focus its intercontinental expansion on South America. KLM will start services to Santiago de Chile (Chile) in February 2014. This is already KLM’s ninth destination in Central and South America. Also this winter, we will add Florence to our European network, operating a twice-daily service to this Italian city. In addition to these new destinations, KLM will make seasonal adjustments to capacity in accordance with market demand and will seek to strengthen and, where possible, expand cooperation with partners. We will also pursue fleet and product developments that are already underway. This winter we will begin replacing our Fokker 70 fleet with six new Embraer 90s, and we will complete the reconfiguration of our new World Business Class aboard our Boeing 747 fleet. Our Boeing 777s are next up for full reconfiguration.

We will continue to offer great links to Japan, which is set to become an even hotter destination as people look to visit the country that will play host to the 2020 Olympic Games, and we look forward to seeing travellers take advantage of our great fares to all three of our Japanese destinations.
