Treat yourself the ultimate city break this summer with a holiday to Lisbon. The Portuguese capital is awash with beautiful sites and enjoyable activities thanks to the cities long history and vibrant culture. Thanks to the numerous beaches in the vicinity, it is also one of the best cities in Europe to visit if you like to spend time by the seaside. To help you enjoy the unmistakable flavour of the Atlantic coast here are six of the top beaches to visit.
Praia da Adraga
Found just over seven miles from Lisbon is the beautiful Praia da Adraga. This unspoilt Atlantic beach is popular for its delightfully blue waters and striking geography. It is also well stocked with amenities and makes for a perfect family day out.
Península da Troia
Just across the water from the city of Setubal near Lisbon, is the sand-lined Troia peninsula. Making up the most northern portion of the long Costa da Caparica, the peninsula is blessed with the beautiful sands and blue waters of Troia Beach. With over ten miles of beach to enjoy, the area is perfect for a relaxing walk, and be sure to check out the Roman ruins nearby.
Praia de Bafureira
This small and popular beach packs a lot into its compact size. Lined with rocky cliffs on each side, Bafureira is served with two esplanades that are always replete with snack stalls and fresh food. The beach also has a slipway meaning it is popular for surfing, jet skiing and boating throughout the year. Though you’re welcome to just sit in a sunlounger and enjoy a glass of wine instead!
Portinho da Arrabida
With arguably the clearest waters of any beach near Lisbon, Portinho da Arrabida is one of the most scenic beaches in Portugal. The crystal blue waters combine with the lush green hills to create a remarkable beauty spot always worth visiting when you are in the area.
Pria do Guincho
Take in the famous sunset at Guincho Beach and enjoy the views of this hill-lined beach. Thanks to the high winds this may not be the best beach for a swim, there are few better spots for windsurfing. In fact, Guincho Beach has even hosted the world windsurfing championships!
Praia de Tamariz
Perfect for family outings, Tamariz Beach is near the charming resort town of Estoril. This relaxing beach is popular among tourists but still retains its quiet and peaceful charm. It is also a stones throw from the picture-postcard Estoril Castle, which gives Tamariz beach a unique backdrop.
